We offer a copy of Nature vol.CXLIII, including landmark papers documenting nuclear fission’s discovery.
Meitner and Frisch’s 'Disintegration of Uranium by Neutrons: a New Type of Nuclear Reaction' presents the first announcement of the process of nuclear fission. Frisch coined the phrase, after the biological term, due to their similarity.
After Hahn and Strassmann observed for the first time the fission of uranium nuclei in December 1938. With their results, Meitner and Frisch, determined that the process splits the atomic nucleus into two smaller nuclei accompanied by a massive energy release. Despite the collaboration, only Hahn received the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Further papers include:
Frisch's 'Physical Evidence for the Division of Heavy Nuclei under Neutron Bombardment'
Halban, Joliot, Kowarski's 'Liberation of Neutrons in the Nuclear Explosion of Uranium'
Meitner and Frisch's 'Products of the Fission of the Uranium Nucleus'
27 x 20 cm, pp.liv+1080. Numerous b&w line drawings, graphs, and photographs. Cloth library binding in good condition, corners a little bumped, with gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Some rubbing to cloth of boards and spine. Red speckled page edges, with some marks. University College of North Wales bookplate and barcode to front paste-down.
Library stamps to title-page and to occasional margins throughout, however key article pages clean (stamp opposite Frisch's article on, p.277).
