Cobalt blue, cut to clear, crystal toilet set consisting of an atomiser, ring holder, powder bowl, perfume and lotion jars with stoppers, on a rectangular tray. The silver trim to the atomizer marked sterling silver bears the D&S stamp for Duncan & Scobbie of Birmingham, active in the early 20th century. Stylistically this is an example of early art Deco in transition from Art Nouveau’s emphasis on soft curvatious decorative floral patterning. While the necks feature thumbnail gadrooning the bodies show hard hobnail, diamond and star paterns, with some asymmetry. The glass carries no maker’s mark but the tray has the typical Thomas Webb 40 point star on its base.
The flat bases of the items show ware consistent with use, and there is an inconspicuous crack in a corner of the tray . (See Photo) An elegant, finely cut, embellishment to any discerning lady’s boudoir.
