From the series "Genij gojuyon-cho - The adventures of Prince Genji in 54 chapters". A heroic epic written around the year 1000 by the court lady Murasaki Shikibu.
Here is chapter 40: Prince Genji enters a sporting competition with his vassal. The opponent challenges by throwing fans into the river. A competition in the context of the cherry blossom festival. Signed: Toyokuni ga (artist name of Kunisada I to III after the founder of the Utagawa school, Toyokuni)
Dated on the left edge: Meiji 30 (= 1898)
Format: oban yoko-e (35.5 x 24.2 cm)
