On offer here is a wonderful pee-box sheet (Vue d´Optique, Opticaprent, Optical View, Peepshow Print) by:
Georg Balthasar Probst in Augsburg
"Die Prächtige Geböude und Brunnen auf dem sogenanten Navona Plaz zu Rom"
Sheet: Med. Fol. No. 37, Probst no. 137
Dimensions: approx. 47.5 x 36 cm
Hand-coloured sheet from the collection of about 400 titles with postcard images issued by the Augsburg publishing house Georg Balthasar Probst. The sheet is dirty and cropped to the edges of the image, at the bottom the second line of text is missing. Some tears, but without image loss.
Peep-box sheets by Probst are nowadays sought-after objects of bygone days, which today no longer exist like that, also in this case. The town of Palmira (or what was left of it) was in the mid-18th century even more impressive than today; this is shown by the series with a total of 4 sheets by Probst, from which this sheet offered here originates.
Probst’s sheets were far superior to foreign optical views, the copper plates are much more particularised, they have lovingly crafted details and a distinctly finer colouring, which makes each of them a wonderful visual treat nowadays.
