San Giorgio e il Drago - Reise-ikon - .925 sølv

Beskrivelse
San Giorgio e il Drago - Reise-ikon - .925 sølv
Russland - Sent på 1800-tallet

As a symbol of paganism and evil, the dragon is a frequent character in the stories of medieval saints.
Among all the dragons slayers, none got as much popular devotion as Saint George, who was made patron of England and Portugal.

The story, as reported in the Legenda Aurea by Jacobus da Varagine, is well known; to ward off a monster that haunted the Libyan city of Selem, its inhabitants used to feed him randomly chosen young victims, at regular intervals. When the King's daughter turn came, Saint George on horseback slayed the dragon with his lance, a scene usually depicted by artists.
