Kora, national musical instrument from Senegal. The large stringed instrument makes a beautiful sound. The Kora stands on it`s own. Large specimen, made from calabash, wood and animal skin. Good condition with a crack at the bottom of the gourd. Have a look at the images for a good impression. The Kora still makes a wonderful sound!
A Kora is a stringed instrument from West Africa that is counted among the harps and played with both hands. It is many hundreds of years old and is mentioned as korri for the first time by Mungo Park in his Travels into the Interior of Africa (1799).
Appearance looks more like a guitar than a harp. The kora consists of a gourd that is stretched with the skin of a cow or an antelope.
The kora is played in Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The most famous kora player is Toumani Diabaté.
